Jayanta Mondol has been a Professor in Solar Energy Technologies and the Research Director at the
Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment since 2019. Before assuming his current role,
he was the Course Director for the BEng (Hons) Architectural Engineering and BEng (Hons) Energy and
Building Services Engineering programs at Ulster University, where he was pivotal in developing the
Architectural Engineering program.
Professor Mondol holds a BSc (Hons) and MSc in Physics from Visva-Bharati University, India, and an
MTech in Energy Science and Technology from Jadavpur University, India. He earned his PhD from
Ulster University in 2004. Before joining the academic faculty in 2008, he was an RCUK Academic
Research Fellow.
He is an esteemed member of several professional organisations, including the Energy Institute, the
Institute of Physics, and the International Solar Energy Society. He is also a Fellow of the Higher
Education Academy.
With over 23 years of research experience, Professor Mondol has excelled in various domains,
including solar energy technologies, energy efficiency in buildings, multifunctional building facades,
off-grid solar systems, and energy system modelling. He has led numerous multidisciplinary research
projects, fostering collaborations with industry partners, academic institutions, and national and local
stakeholders. His research has attracted over £18 million in funding from prestigious bodies such as
EPSRC, Invest Northern Ireland, Royal Society, UK India Education and Research Initiative, Innovate
UK, InterTradeIreland, and the EU. Notably, he served as Project Manager and Principal Investigator
for projects like ‘SolaFin2Go’ and ‘SolaNetwork,’ funded by EPSRC and Innovate UK.
Professor Mondol has also contributed significantly to various professional and academic
communities. He served as the Work Group leader for the EU COST Action project (TU1205) and as a
working group member for the Bio-Energy action plan in Northern Ireland. He is an active member of
the Climate Emergency Committee for The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RUSA) and serves on the
Editorial Board for the Journal of Renewable Energy, Sustainable Buildings Journal, and Journal of Solar
Energy Research Updates. He has also been a Guest Editor for several special issues of esteemed
journals and is a valued technical and scientific committee member for various international
conferences. Additionally, he regularly reviews for more than 30 international journals.
Professor Mondol has published research papers in reputable peer-reviewed journals, conference
proceedings, and edited book chapters. He has also contributed to over 20 research reports for
industry-led research projects. His outstanding work has been recognised with awards at international
conferences such as WREC, ISES, and EUROSUN. The International Solar Energy Society honoured him
with the ‘Best Full-Length Paper published in Solar Energy Journal’ award.
